The Little Guy was found on Tuesday 6/27/06 by Max and RePete. They were barking at something on the other side of the fence. The Little Guy is a male Chihuahua, all brown, with a white nose and about a year old.
The Little Guy was found by a neighbor that put him out under a carport and on a cushion. The Little Guy looked really sick. Jan took him over to the Temecula Emergency Clinic that night. The vet prescribed pain meds and antibiotics and gave a free x-ray.
The x-ray showed a pelvis that was displaced by about the height of a vertebra. Painful situation.
The Little Guy can be treated by the North County Humane Society with funds from the In Memory of Barbara Duke fund. This fund is specifically targeted to stray or abandoned animals. There are many people that do not take care of their animals. There are also many other people that will care for animals properly, provide foster homes and do whatever is necessary to care for an animal. NCHS is one of those places. They have a 'no-kill' policy.
On Friday, 6/30, a local Hemet vet looked at the dog and his x-ray. He said it was a job for a specialist.
The range of quotes for the surgery runs from $1500 to $3500.
So The Little Guy needs your help.

The In Memory of Barbara Duke fund is over $2000. Let's get it up over $5000 to help the Little Guy plus the next stray or abandoned dog that enters your life.
Barbara Duke is saving the life of a dog. She's not even alive now. That is an exceptional legacy to leave.
Any size contribution is welcome.
The Little Guy will be brought to NCHS as soon as a surgery can be scheduled next week and then transferred to a vet that will do surgery. Jan and Rola, Barb's mother, will provide foster care for The Little Guy during his recovery.
We will keep you posted on The Little Guy's progress here.

The Little Guy is going to have surgery tommorrow, July 7. It took a LOT of
haggling, phone calls, emails by Jan, Rola and NCHS.
He was brought over to NCHS on July 5. Rola, Barb's Mom is his foster home.
Here are some pictures:

The Little Guy was over at the SD vet that specializes in hip surgery.
He took some more x-rays of The Little Guy.
Unfortunately, The Little Guy will NOT be getting an operation to fix him. His pelvis has started to heal and the surgery would require breaking the hip and then repositioning it. It is unfortunate that we could not get this Little Guy to a vet to do the operation sooner. The holiday and funding methods delayed immediate help.
The Little Guy will continue to recover at the foster homes of Rola and Dick Grove and Jan Meyer. Both foster homes have dog(s). The Grove's have a 12 year old Beagle. Jan has a 9 year old and a 4 month old. Hopefully, these dogs will help socialize The Little Guy and help make him more desirable as an adoptable pet. It will probably be about 6 months before The Little Guy is healed enough to be adopted. Today's specialist vet said The Little Guy should not have any future problems with bowel movements or spinal damage.
We failed The Little Guy because we could not get him into surgery fast enough. We did succeed in saving The Little Guy's life. He would have been put down if I dropped him off at the Ramona Humane Shelter. Money and the holiday were not in The Little Guy's favor.
The Little Guy will become a good dog member of our society.
The Little Guy was adopted by Rola, Barb's mom. His hip healed up and he runs around just like any other dog.
The Little Guy was named Max. One day while he was recuperating in the bathtub at Jan's house, Max (Jan's puppy) peered over the edge of the tub and sort of scared The Little Guy. Jan said "Max!" and the Little Guy's head popped up as though responding to his name. Over the next few weeks, Rola and Jan tried many different names, and he always responded to Max as though that was his name. Max is The Little Guy's name now. Max is living happily ever after with Rola and Dick.
